What Is Residence Status?

Foreign nationals staying in Japan must hold a “residence status” corresponding to the content of their activities and the purpose of their stay. Residence statuses are prescribed by law and are classified into more than 24 types, including work, study, and dependent status. The activities permitted under each status are prescribed, and activities are required to be conducted within that scope.

Main Types of Residence Status

For example, “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” is a residence status for people who work at companies as engineers or interpreters. “Technical Intern Training” is a status whose purpose is to acquire skills, and there are strict standards regarding the accepting company and the period. In addition, “Dependent” covers family members who live together with a person who works or engages in other activities.

The Process of Obtaining One

To obtain a residence status, it is important first to select the status that matches the content of your activities and to prepare the required documents. In addition to filling in the application form, you need to assemble supporting materials such as the employment contract and work history. After that, you apply to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau and screening is conducted. Screening can take from several weeks to several months, and if there are errors or missing documents, you may be asked to submit additional materials.
